What Baseten does
Baseten is an inference platform for teams that want to run AI models in production. It hosts open-source, custom and fine-tuned models on dedicated deployments. Those deployments can run in Baseten Cloud, inside your own VPC through self-hosting, or in a hybrid setup that adds on-demand capacity from the vendor's cloud.
For quick experiments there are Model APIs: pre-optimized models you call directly. The vendor describes them as OpenAI compatible, so moving away from a closed model means swapping a URL, and structured outputs and tool use are supported. When usage grows, the same models can move to dedicated deployments. Baseten also offers training infrastructure, and trained models can be deployed onto the same stack. For packaging, the pricing page points to Truss, an open source standard that works with models built in any framework.
Pricing is usage based. Compute is priced per GPU or CPU instance type, and Model APIs are priced per million tokens by model. New accounts receive credits for trying things out. Pro and Enterprise show no public price: you ask for a quote, and volume discounts are available. Enterprise adds custom SLAs and self-host deployments. The pages state SOC 2 Type II certification and HIPAA compliance.
- Dedicated deployments for custom and open-source models
- OpenAI-compatible Model APIs
- Structured outputs and tool use
- Training infrastructure
- Cloud, self-hosted and hybrid deployment
- Autoscaling across clouds and regions
- Truss model packaging
- SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance
Pros and cons
Pros
- Pay-as-you-go billing with no charge for idle time
- Model APIs are described as OpenAI compatible, so switching means swapping a URL
- Deployment options include Baseten Cloud, self-hosted and hybrid
- Supports open-source, custom and fine-tuned models, plus training
- States SOC 2 Type II certification and HIPAA compliance
Cons
- Self-host deployments and custom SLAs are tied to the Enterprise plan
- Free credits for new accounts have no stated amount
- Spend depends on GPU type and usage, so cost is harder to predict than a flat fee
- Compute in other countries and regions requires contacting sales
Our take
Baseten fits engineering teams that already know which models they want to serve and need production hosting with autoscaling, from a quick Model API test to dedicated GPUs. Because billing follows active compute, it suits uneven traffic. It fits less well if you need fixed, predictable pricing or published rates for the higher tiers, since Pro and Enterprise require a quote. The pages also do not say how many free credits a new account gets, so check that before committing. Self-hosting and custom SLAs sit in the Enterprise plan, so teams needing them should plan on a sales conversation.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay for idle time on Baseten?
No. The pricing page says you only pay while your model is using compute, which includes deploying, scaling up or down, and making predictions.
Can I try Baseten for free?
The pricing page says new accounts come with credits so you can explore the UI and experiment with deployments for free. The amount is not stated.
Can I run Baseten in my own infrastructure?
Yes. The pricing page says you can self-host Baseten to manage security and use your own cloud commitments. Self-host deployments are listed under Enterprise.
