What Braintrust does

Traces production LLM agents, scores their outputs with LLMs, code or humans, and runs evals that can gate releases.

Braintrust is a platform for watching and testing AI agents. It records production traces, including prompts, responses and tool calls, and lets teams score the outputs using LLM judges, code, or human reviewers. The same scorers can be used in offline experiments and on live traffic, and CI/CD gates can stop changes that lower quality. Datasets can be built from production traces, and a built-in assistant called Loop proposes prompts, scorers and datasets. A gateway and SDKs for Python, TypeScript, Go, Ruby and C# handle instrumentation, and an MCP server lets a coding agent query logs from an IDE.

Pricing has three tiers. Starter costs $0 / month and includes $10 in model credits, 1 GB of processed data, 10k scores and 14-day retention; extra data is +$4/GB and extra scores are +$2.50/1k. Pro costs $249 / month with $100 credits, 5 GB, 50k scores and 30-day retention, plus +$3/GB for extra data, +$1.50/1k for extra scores and $0.50 per GB per month for retention beyond the included period. Enterprise is custom pricing and adds custom retention, export and on-prem or hosted deployment. All three plans list unlimited users, projects, datasets, playgrounds and experiments. The pricing page shows one monthly figure per plan and no separate yearly price.

  • Trace prompts, responses and tool calls
  • Score with LLM judges, code or humans
  • Loop agent for prompts, scorers and datasets
  • Production traces to eval datasets

Good for / Not for

Good for

  • Teams running AI agents in production that need trace inspection
  • Teams that want to turn production failures into eval datasets
  • Engineers who want CI/CD quality gates for prompt and model changes

Not for

  • Anyone needing more than 14-day retention without paying (Starter limit)
  • Buyers who want a fixed all-in price, since data and scores are billed beyond included amounts

How to start

  1. Sign up on the free Starter plan; no credit card is required. source

  2. Initialize the SDK once, or point your provider base URL at the gateway, to start tracing LLM calls. source

  3. Build datasets from production logs and run an experiment with scorers. source

  4. Add the CI/CD action so quality gates block bad changes. source

Limits and gotchas

  • Starter includes 1 GB processed data and 10k scores per month, then +$4/GB and $2.50 per 1,000. source
  • Starter retention is 14-day; Pro is 30-day, then $0.50 per GB per month, up to 180 days. source
  • Starter has 1 human review score per project. source

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free Starter plan at $0 / month, no credit card required
  • Unlimited users, projects, datasets, playgrounds and experiments on every plan
  • Same scorers can run offline in experiments and online on production traffic
  • SDKs for several languages plus a gateway and an MCP server

Cons

  • Starter retention is only 14-day
  • Processed data and scores are billed extra beyond included amounts (e.g. +$4/GB on Starter)
  • Pro jumps to $249 / month
  • Starter allows 1 human review score per project
  • No yearly-billed price or free trial of paid plans is shown

Our take

Braintrust fits teams that already run LLM agents in production and want tracing, scoring and release checks in one place. The free Starter plan with no credit card makes it possible to try instrumentation before paying, and users and projects are not capped. The trade-offs are usage-based extras: processed data, scores and longer retention are billed beyond the included amounts, so costs depend on traffic. Starter keeps data for only 14 days, and the pages do not list a free trial of paid plans. Teams without agents or LLM features will find little use for it.
