What Tyk does

Tyk is an API and AI management platform built around a gateway. It puts REST, GraphQL, gRPC, MCP and A2A traffic under one control plane, so rate limiting, authentication, governance and observability work the same way for classic APIs and for AI agents.

On the API side it lists a developer portal, RBAC and SSO, an audit trail, OpenTelemetry-based observability, and GitOps tooling including a Kubernetes Operator.

Deployment can be Cloud, Hybrid or Self-managed. In Hybrid, Tyk Cloud runs the control plane while you host the gateways. Self-managed keeps the whole platform in your own environment, including air-gapped setups according to the homepage.

Pricing is not published. There are three plans: Core, priced by the number of APIs managed; Professional, priced by data planes, environments and control-plane deployments rather than traffic; and Enterprise, with custom pricing. Core and Professional both include unlimited API calls. The Tyk Gateway and Tyk Pump are open source and free; the Dashboard, Developer Portal and Operator need a paid license. A 48-hour Tyk Cloud trial and a 14-day Self-Managed trial are offered.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One control plane for REST, GraphQL, gRPC, MCP and A2A traffic
  • Open source Tyk Gateway and Tyk Pump are free
  • Cloud, Hybrid and Self-managed deployment, including air-gapped operation per the homepage
  • Core and Professional plans include unlimited API calls and a developer portal
  • Trial options: 48 hours on Cloud without a credit card, or 14 days self-managed

Cons

  • No public prices; every plan is quoted by sales
  • Dashboard, Developer Portal and Operator are licensed, not free
  • Cloud trial lasts only 48 hours
  • If a license lapses, creating or updating APIs is blocked until renewal

Our take

Tyk suits teams that want one gateway and control plane for both traditional APIs and AI agent traffic, and that need to keep data in their own infrastructure. The split between a free open source gateway and licensed management components gives a way to start small, though most of the platform requires a paid plan. The main trade-off is price opacity: no plan shows a list price, so budgeting means talking to sales. It is less of a fit for anyone who wants a self-serve checkout, a fixed monthly price, or a purely free tool beyond the gateway and Pump. The short Cloud trial of 48 hours leaves limited time to evaluate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tyk cost?

Pricing is not published on the official site. Core is priced by the number of APIs managed, Professional by data planes, environments and control-plane deployments, and Enterprise is custom. Plans are quoted by Tyk sales.

Is there a free version?

The open source Tyk Gateway and Tyk Pump are free. Other components such as the Dashboard and Developer Portal are licensed. There is also a 48-hour Tyk Cloud trial and a 14-day Self-Managed trial.

Can I run Tyk in my own environment?

Yes. Tyk supports Cloud, Hybrid and Self-managed deployments, and the pricing page says both control plane and data plane can run entirely within your environment.

What happens if my license expires?

Existing APIs keep serving traffic, but creating or updating APIs is blocked until the license is renewed. API definitions can be exported and run on the open source Tyk Gateway.
